My Favorite Games of 2023.
Hi. Hello. Thanks ever so much for clicking on this page. Happy to have you.
First thing's first: I'm a little freak when it comes to video games. I don't feel the need to beat most games I play. From Software is one of my favorite studios in the industry and I've never finished a single one of their games. This means, fortunately, that I get to play a LOT more games than the average bear.
I've written up some blurbs about my top ten favorite games from 2023, but before that here's the list of every game I remember playing this year that left any sort of lasting impact on me (in no particular order):
Dead Space Remake Resident Evil 4 Remake F-Zero 99 Humanity Dredge Metroid Prime Remastered Anemoiaplois Alan Wake 2 Baldur’s Gate 3 LoZ Tears of the Kingdom Counter Strike 2 Hunt Showdown El Paso Elsewhere Jusant Slay the Princess| Remnant II The Finals Street FIghter 6 Lethal Company BattleBit Remastered Don’t Scream Homebody The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog Pizza Tower World of Horror Super Mario Wonder Mr. Sun’s Hatbox Fifa 23 Sea of Stars (Demo) Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update)
And the games I played that were NOT released in 2023:
Unpacking Persona 4 Golden Picross 7 The Order 1886 Shovel Knight Dig Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Spider-Man: Miles Morales Pac-Man Championship Edition DX Project Zomboid Quake LoZ The Minish Cap Drill Dozer Wario Land 4 Pokemon Pinball Resident Evil Revelations Summer of ‘58 Trackmania TwinCop We Were Here Visage Cursed Halo CE Half-Life 2 (I probably play this once per year) Witch Hunt Red Dead Redemption 2 Cyberpunk 2077 Borderlands 3 Brutal Legend Cultic Slay the Spire PUBG Rez Infinite Batman Arkham City Alan Wake Alan Wake: American Nightmare Max Payne LoZ: Majora’s Mask 3DS Metroid Prime Metroid Prime 2 Tunic Everhood Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII Remake GOODBYE WORLD Yakuza: Like a Dragon Critters for Sale Dome Keeper Phasmophobia Hades Nintendo Switch Sports
Now that you understand the kind of freak you're dealing with…
Let's dive into my top ten favorite games from this objectively fucked up year.
10. El Paso Elsewhere Developed by Texas indie studio Strange Scaffold, El Paso Elsewhere is a Max Payne-clone with vampires, an opinionated narrator, and lots and lots of bullet time. As a small studio punching well above their weight class, Strange Scaffold leans into abstract, PlayStation 1 minimalism when it comes to visuals and pairs them with a soundtrack that will make your hands sweat. The vibes are here and they're ready for the end of the world. I'm personally also a big fan of everything this studio stands for.
9. Mr. Sun's Hatbox I want you to imagine Metal Gear Solid V. Now I want you to imagine that game as a 2D, level-based, slapstick platformer you can play with up to three friends. If you think that sounds stupid, you'd be right. And it's beautiful. As you build up a secret army of soldiers with various skills (and disorders), you'll start to develop *favorites*. This game constantly asks if you're willing to send those favorites on a harrowing mission and risk losing them forever… or if you'd rather send an idiot you recently captured who blinks constantly and can't kill anyone without fainting.
8. Dredge Every year I feel like I find one game that falls into the “just one more round” category, and baby… Dredge was it for 2023. As a weary fisherman in strange waters, you'll make the most out of your 12 measly hours of sunlight only for your daily voyages to inevitably pull you into the darkness of night, and night is when things get weird. Rocks emerge from the fog that you swear weren't there before, your equipment malfunctions, and you're pretty sure you just saw something in the water… something big. Despite only containing a small collection of islands, the world of Dredge manages to feel vast - perhaps vast enough to swallow you whole.
7. Resident Evil 4 Remake I was curious to see what sort of changes would be made to the timeless classic and father of modern 3rd person shooters, Resident Evil 4. I wasn't let down. RE4 Remake takes all the things that didn't age well about the original, tossed them out, and replaced them with only good things. And MORE things! It's campy, fun, and better than a game of bingo.
6. Jusant I really feel like this one didn't get the recognition it deserves. Jusant is a rock climbing game that combines the quiet contemplation of Journey with the mechanical specificity of Death Stranding. Unlike Death Standing, though, there is very little story to interrupt your flow. There are plenty of collectible bits to find for those curious to learn more about what happened before the events of the game, but the environmental storytelling does most of the heavy lifting. For me, the joy of the game comes from how it feels. Right trigger controls your right hand grip, and left trigger controls left hand grip. Plan your route, manage your stamina, and climb high above the clouds in search of answers.
5. F-Zero 99 This. Shit. Slaps. I've never been a big F-Zero guy, but this MADE me one. The “battle royale”, 99 player format is the perfect fit for the ruthless, high octane world of the game. Races last about three minutes, and friend, they are the most intense, white-knuckled three minutes of your life. The decision to make your boost meter the same as your health meter started in F-Zero 64 (I believe), and it is so much more HARROWING in this game when another player could side-swipe you mere meters from the finish line and blow you to bits. Sadly it's only playable via Switch Online, but it made me cheer, laugh, and scream enough this year to earn a spot in my top 5.
4. Alan Wake 2 Remedy makes weird games that also manage to exist in the AAA space and for that I will forever love them. Although Alan Wake 2 resembles a 3rd person shooter survival horror, I'd honestly say it's more of a narrative game than anything else. There's sidequests, there's puzzles, there's upgradeable skills, but at the end of the day the characters, world, and story are what kept me playing. If you haven't checked them out recently, you should definitely watch a story recap of the original games before diving into this sequel, but the wild swings for the fences this game takes are well worth that small price of admission. There's a god damn musical number, for Christ's sake.
3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom I've really got nothing to say about this game that most people don't already know. It's incredible. The fact that Nintendo made a game that redefined an entire genre and then made a SEQUEL to it that ups the ante is remarkable. To be honest, I've only cleared the Rito, Zora, and Goron cities. I got a bit tired of exploring the depths and guiding Koroks to their friends, but I can't deny the sheer level of complexity and polish on display here. I saw someone on TikTok build a functioning Mecha Godzilla in this game. Good God. I've heard that the ending of this game is one of the best in the franchise, and if I'd seen it this year then it may have wound up higher on my list, but for the time being I'll continue picking up this masterpiece from time to time, chipping away at it until the day comes that I can finally smack the tits off thicc Ganondorf.
2. Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update) I know I'm gonna get shit for this, but I don't care. This year was the 25th anniversary of Half-Life and Valve released an update that made playing it (and it's online Death Match) much more accessible. I threw it on my Steam Deck out of curiosity, expecting to play for 20 minutes. I could not put it down. It is unbelievable how modern this game still feels. I simply had so much fun sprinting through the corridors of Black Mesa with a dozen weapons strapped to my back, blasting aliens and military Spec-Op chumps as a 24(?!) year old theoretical physicist.
1. Baldur's Gate III This game is fucked up, man. The sheer amount of writing in this game scares me. We can all talk about how BIG this game is, it deserves it, but the thing BG3 does better than any other role playing game I have ever experienced is actually encourage roleplaying. I've played through Act I four times now, with four different groups of friends, and it has felt fresh every time. I have seen the same events play out in so many different ways that it boggles the mind, but in every one of those play sessions I see players asking themselves “What would my lil guy do here?” rather than "what is the best thing to do here?" The game rewards players constantly for just trying shit and the D&D 5e rule set means playing like the character you said you were from the start leads to frequent Points of Inspiration. Maybe one day I'll see the end of this story (probably not), but I don't have to in order to feel a connection with BG3's world, characters, and most impressively, the characters I made myself.
Honorable Mentions for 2023
5. Dave the Diver 4. Homebody 3. Sea of Stars 2. Humanity 1. Super Mario Wonder
Top 5 Favorites NOT from 2023
5. Metroid Prime 4. Final Fantasy VII Remake 3. Cursed Halo (Halo CE Mod) 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 1. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (3DS)
Games I didn't have a chance to play from 2023 but still want to when I find more time...

Are you in need of some video to watch?
May I suggest 1) the first completion of possibly the most difficult Trackmania map ever made (a massive platforming challenge with no checkpoints where players can lose a half hour of progress in a single mistake), narrated by a highly knowledgeable trackmania player explaining just why it's so difficult, and 2) a stitched together dream of a 15 minute run of the same map created by two highly skilled players finding the most insane skips imaginable.

(1) Not flashed out yet. But yk very Estonia-centric clicker game. Web/app/desktop. Mostly text / UI based game.
(2) Anon feedback would be two-way fully anonymous. Basically you would create a "hub" with a secret URL, without login, and then you would give a public URL to others. They could then come have "anon ask" but as a 2-way, private conversation. Obviously there would be some elementary spam/hate filtering tools. Web only.
(3) the point of this resource management strategy roguelike would be to realize it's literally impossible to habituate Mars, and you will have to fail, move back in time, and start breaking laws of physics one by one until you "succeed". Web/app. Mostly text / UI.
(4) Like above, but with failing to deal with climate change. More of a world/politics sim. Web/app/desktop. Mostly text / UI.
(5) 2D or 3D game where you're on an Earth ravaged by war and climate change apocalypsi, but like. No one's mad, there's no supermutants. You just pick a broom and start reclaiming the land, demolishing skyscrapers, tilling the soil. Maybe Stardew Valley vibes. Mostly desktop, maybe app/web.
(6) Similar to Liero / Noita / Clonk games - sideways 2D digging into the ground, but you have to rush and you have limited resources. No diamond pickaxe Minecraft, you have to be clever to rescue survivors. Serious vibe, but not grimdark; more uplifting that people help each other. 2D. Mostly desktop, maybe app/web.
(7) This would have optionally infinite / procedurally generated levels just to mess around and do like car backflips, but also some hand-made world where you could just drive slowly and obey all the traffic laws. No competitive racing. 3D. Desktop only.
(8) Depressive adventure-ish game / visual novel / JRPG-like time management. Climate change related, of course, but the main point is that besides money, you have to save water credits, and can't buy almost anything without them. Not sure what would be the story besides running away to the countryside and learning survival skills; that feels like cheap. Mostly text / UI. Web/app/desktop.
(I have dozens more ideas but these are the ones fresh in my mind now.)

So I went back to play some old seasons of Trackmania while waiting for the Winter 2024 season in a couple days. It's really shown me that even though it's slow, I'm definitely making lots of progress. I was getting golds on tracks I couldn't even get bronze on and beating times I remember grinding for in only a few attempts.
Even though there's a long way to go with my skill; the fact that the game has such an active community, it's fun to play and improve, and there's constantly new content makes it so fun to keep coming back to. And I think it's gonna be a game that I keep playing for a long time. It's currently my 7th most played game on steam with 100+ hours (which obviously doesn't count the 2021 playtime from when it was epic exclusive), and with how much I want to keep playing it, it's probably gonna become top 5 soon.
Even though I didn't mention it all in my GOTY discussion, I probably should have, because it was released (at least on Steam) in 2023, I played it for the majority of the year, and I've been enjoying so much. I don't think it would have beat Neon White, but it would have been up there ahead of a bunch of the other games I was considering.

What games would you want to see in a potential Sonic Game Collection for the series' 30th anniversary?
I’d do two sets of collections.
I think official ports of the Retro Engine Sonic 1 and 2 would be mandatory. We just had M2 do Sega Ages versions on the Switch, and those are pretty good ports, but I think officially adopting the Retro Engine versions from this point forward is what I’d want, ideally.
I also feel like if they’re ever going to pull the curtain back on wtf is up with Sonic 3, this would be the best opportunity to re-debut the game. And Sonic 3 means & Knuckles, too. And if we’re doing Retro Engine, that’s what these games should be using, too.
We do not need Sonic 3D Blast or Sonic Spinball. Forget about them. Instead, I think Sonic CD (Retro Engine) is an obvious one. And then maybe one or two other obscure games -- SegaSonic Arcade or Knuckles Chaotix are a given. Something that’s never been ported before. They don’t necessarily have to be Retro Engine remakes, but I think we need something new.
I’d do documentary-level bonus features. Previous Sonic collections have included limited amounts of concept art and things, but I’d go buck wild here. They dug out a lot of concept art for the Cook & Becker book; I think they could include a lot of it here in digital form. Maybe put together some video content (if somebody from Sega is reading this, give me a ring, I’ve got production experience and I’d be willing to volunteer my skills for something like this; my public-facing email address is listed on Youtube). Talk a lot about how these games evolved over development. The “Dr. Badvibes/Madonna” era of Sonic 1, Sonic 2′s time travel, the SVP version of Sonic 3, etc.
Maybe even scan and translate Japanese Sonic Manga stuff, or the official Japanese Sonic Team strategy guides.
I’d also go hog wild on leaderboards. I really liked the leaderboard system in Sonic Runners, where it’s sort of like this league system where you submit scores to level up your ranking. I’d want a system to automatically pick levels from the included games, with a new level every week. Players would get trophies that appear next to their name on the leaderboard.
Maybe, finally, since a lot of what I’m proposing would be Retro Engine, maybe some kind of online multiplayer racing would be possible. Again, leaderboard trophies would be displayed somewhere, and maybe you could even unlock new titles and badges, like you get in fighting games these days. Maybe other modes would be possible, too, like collecting the most rings within a time limit, or searching levels for a Sonic CD robot generator. Perhaps multiplayer races could even be done Trackmania style; instead of active racing, you get dropped in to a map full of replay ghosts and do time trials.
That’s the first collection. Sonic 1 + 2 + 3&K + CD + SegaSonic Arcade, detailed game history sections, online multiplayer racing, league-based leaderboard system.
Second collection would move beyond the usual suspects of 16-bit Sonic. I’m less clear what games I’d pick, though. We could do Sonic Adventure + Sonic Adventure 2 + Sonic Heroes, or we could do Unleashed + Colors + Generations. If it’s the Sonic Adventures, I’d want to have the original Dreamcast version of at least SA1. Preferably, also, SA2.
I’d want as much feature parity with the first collection as possible. Development history, league-based leaderboards. Online multiplayer racing would be harder to pull off, but probably not impossible.
Maybe I’d also throw in like Sonic the Fighters in there, or something. Sonic Pocket Adventure would fit the era, too, but I feel like there’s more than enough material for multiple “Sonic Portable Collection”s, too.

Cross-posting @the-apoka (so CW seggs)
Past night I did 2 (3?) dreams, where one I was doing Parkour with @rats-morts and other friends to free people who didn't want to be in an oppressive place and steal stuff. We had sex in that dream Remedios and me.
The other one where I started some things with a cis girl friend (or a colleague???). We had spontaneous sex in it, her and me. This dream was really vivid, because I remember how she looked like, felt like, before the sex, during the sex and after it. I also remember telling her that I was a trans woman who never did SRS and she should know about it so she wouldn't be surprised. She got tense and stressed because she was like "what if I don't satisfy you, I never had seggs with a trans girl". I told her that it was fine, we would have time to learn about that. I remember thinking something like "would Remedios be interested with her too?" later in that specific dream.
Then in the last dream, I was with a trans girl friend I'd like to meet. She had crazy trackmania skills and I was completely admirative of her. At some point, we were hugging but while hugging I felt her thing against mine and I remember the burning desire to have seggs with her.
That's it.
That was a wild ride.

Research on Time trial games
TrackMania:
For my Time trail games I thought it would be best for me to start with one I know the most and it being track mania. This game was the main reason for this idea coming to my head and there are many things that I like from this game.
The main thing I like from this game is the Medals and leader boards it puts into the game. first Off they have a set of different medals you can get after complete ting a map making you go back to it eager to achieve a better score. Now with these medals they also give you a ghost of the gold medal run similarly to mario kart that helps you understand there routes and where you where going wrong and I think it was a nice addition to help players out.
Secondly I really like the Different terrains they have in the game to make it more interesting instead of having the same terrain for every level the different terrains are dirt plastic and ice. These changes seem like they wouldn't do much but they change the whole way you play and complete a level making you have to take corners and jumps differently from how you would normally.
Marble It up:
Next Is marble it up even though I have never played it I have watched A nice amount of gameplay for this game and it does seem really fun to play. One of the reasons I liked this game
Similar to Trackmania with Leader boards and medals this game has its own system that is the same leader board wise but adds an extra medal being platinum adding the competitive side to the game just like track mania as in beating yourselves and others.
Another thing I like is something that is unique to this game with it being the pickup ability mechanic which adds a layer of depth to the game. These ability's consist of big jumps huge speed increase and even slowing down the timer on the clock these are just cool and fun things to add to the game and add alot of skill as the player can collect the ability but they have to choose the right place and time to use it.
Mind Map and Mood Board of My ideas so far:

Trackmania is Gearing Up to be a Worthy Franchise Reboot
June 3, 2020 12:30 PM EST
Trackmania, a soft reboot of the long running franchise, is a minimalistic yet surprisingly deep racing sim that offers plenty of features to longtime fans.
Ubisoft Nadeo‘s Trackmania (releasing on July 1 for PC) is a remake of Trackmania Nations, which first launched in 2006 as a freeware title. The franchise itself, which has been around since 2003, is a niche one that doesn’t see much publicity from Ubisoft, yet has a dedicated fanbase.
This time around Trackmania will be using a tier system to determine accessible content, with the first tier being free and the next two being paid versions with options to either pay for one year or three years of access.
youtube
The title in question, rather than focus on polishing graphics to their limits, takes a minimalist approach to the racing sim genre by focusing their efforts on track design, physics, and the time trial mechanic. There are several basic modes — Solo, Live, Clubs, Local, and Create — with this preview allowing me to test out Solo, Local, and Create.
Solo includes three features: Summer 2020, Track of the Day, and Training. Summer 2020 is the general arcade/time attack mode for the game. The category that’s known right now as Summer 2020 is where all the seasonal content is located. Every season, new tracks will become available to players to work through, meaning even more free content. Track of the Day lets you race against other players on user-created maps.
Both the seasonal and Training modes feature 20 different tracks to race on, in which you can collect medals and aim for the best record time. There’s no pressure to be immediately perfect; Trackmania promotes gradual mastery of racing techniques and skill. Players have the power to restart the track at any time if you turn over, go off the track, get off to a slow start, or any other reason.
Each track is comprised of a unique challenge that players must circumvent to reach the finish line. Some feature obstacles such as bumps, ice paths, or jumps that you must figure out how to navigate. Other tracks may have an acceleration or cut engine pad that either drastically speeds your vehicle up or completely stops the engine. In this case, you need to learn how to brake to slow down on curves or make turns while avoiding losing too much speed before hitting a ramp.
There are no other cars, no music, and the graphics are extremely minimal (environments look like cardboard cutouts). It’s just you, the roar of the engine, and a single track to conquer. But the simplicity of it all is actually to Trackmania’s benefit, as it allows the player to focus on first completing the track and then shaving precious seconds off their best time. It’s an addictive mode that isn’t distracted by unnecessary bells and whistles but instead features an incredibly detailed and well-developed physics system.
Next, I tried out Local, which is the local multiplayer. The online multiplayer scene is one of the most important aspects of the franchise, as players form long-lasting communities and race each other to improve both their times and their skills. There are four categories under Local: Local Multiplayer, Play a Map, Against Replay, and Local Network.
Another popular mode among hardcore fans is Create, which lets players create, edit, or customize something of their own from scratch. Map Editor, separated into Simple and Advanced, is how you create a map of your own. Paired with that is the Map Editor which is used to test out said maps. Mouse and keyboard or gamepad are available to edit with (though the latter wasn’t an option during the preview). There’s also an interesting mode called Replay Editor, which is essentially a way to race against your own ghost data (labeled Red and Green) that continuously updates. Finally, Garage is how players will most likely customize their car.
The map creation is easy to use for novice players with plenty of depth for the more experienced fan. I had no issues jumping right in and making my own tracks, though naturally, Simple was much easier to work compared to the features-heavy Advanced version.
When you first start Trackmania, it’s almost surreal how barebones it seems, especially with how simple the startup is with no introduction to controls. That said, the gameplay more than makes up for the negatives. The controls are easy to figure out, silky smooth, with a physics engine realistic enough to simulate how cars will drive through a variety of obstacles and track conditions.
Hearing the engine purr, mastering a new course, and shaving off that half-second from your best time is such an immensely satisfying feeling. And it will keep feeding you those endorphins, possibly for months or even years to come depending on the future downloadable content.
Trackmania is a game that’s devoted to a single goal, with its multitude of modes made to cater to that goal. But the parts it chooses to polish shine brightly and could turn into a game that hardcore fans of both the series and the racing sim genre are sure to love.
